I also enjoyed the numerous conversations John and I had; his unending willingness to share his honest insights, thoughts and ideas on literally any question I asked. Whether pertaining to the business of photography or the way he ran his, …even when they challenged his personal approach.

The, what seemed to be, never ending “data mining” trips to the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in downtown D.C.; which we frequented so often that the “regulars” began to look at us in the same way.

I came to see the inside of the “machine” and that is exactly what I was privy to. I saw first hand the tremendous amount of time and energy that it takes to run a successful photography business and how incredibly important the nuisances and intricacies of contracts, negotiations and business acumen are to maintaining that success.

I was able to further substantiate the notion that the quality of your pictures matter little without an ability to market, sell and produce those images in a way that allows one to sustain their livelihood.
