Most Enjoyed:

It was great to accompany John on his large variety of assignments. He had some very busy weeks where we did something completely different each day. I found the variety wonderful for learning about what types of projects photographers get paid to do. I also really enjoyed and appreciated when John brought me to a lot of photography-related events and introduced me to many photographers in Washington and New York.

Least Enjoyed:

When I first began, my least favorite part was the responsibility of packing all of John’s equipment. I had heard stories of those who had forgotten essential items and I did not want to be one of them! Once I learned this however, I enjoyed helping him be prepared.

What I Learned:

I learned that this is the perfect experience for someone who knows that he or she wants to have a career in photography. John encourages his interns to further develop their own careers while working alongside him and he has the resources to help. I had also never seen the inner workings of a small business to this extent. Assisting him on assignments was great for learning what to do on the job. However, the work back in his office was also incredibly beneficial to learning about how to keep the work coming and the business running. He taught me a lot about accounting and using Quickbooks to organize business finances. I found the accounting and organizational aspect of the internship incredibly useful.
